On Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at 7:09 pm, the Westhampton Beach Fire Department was notified for a smoke investigation south of Sunrise Hwy, west of County Road 31 in the area of the Hampton West Estates. While the initial units were responding, the County Fire/Rescue dispatch center advised that they were now receiving numerous calls for a brush fire south of the houses on Hamilton Ave in the Pine Barrens with one caller reporting they could see flames over the tops of the trees. Upon arrival to Hamilton Ave, a column of smoke was visible from deep in the woods. Brush Truck 7-8-12 made its way to the fire area and found between 1 and 2 acres actively burning. The fire was more than 500 feet off the road with flames higher than the truck. Due to the volume of fire, the recent dry spell and the dry ground fuel conditions, mutual aid for brush trucks was requested from Eastport, Quogue and the East Quogue Fire Departments. Thankfully, the winds were calm and the 4 trucks were able to quickly contain the fire. Units remained on scene for approximately 90 minutes dousing hot spots and soaking the area to reduce the possibility of flare ups. The Southampton Town Fire Marshals were called to investigate the cause of the fire which was deemed suspicious. Westhampton Ambulance was also on scene standing by. However, no injuries were reported. One brush truck did suffered minor damage but was repaired on scene without further incident. Command of Fire Operations was conducted by 1st Asst Chief Mauro DeBenedetto
