Around 9:40AM construction workers broke a natural gas main line on Main Street while working to bury utilities on Westhampton Beach's $11 Million Main Street Project. Third assistant Chief Saccente was first on scene ordering the evacuation of nearby businesses and provided the arriving units with a strategy to disrupt the gas flow from entering buildings around the burst pipe. 7-8-1 and 7-8-2 arrived first and placed 1-3/4" fog streams on the gas line while hooking to a water source and setting up portable master streams. Once all streams were in place and nearby businesses were evacuated crews stood by for two hours while National Grid worked to shut down the line. Once the line was shut down, firefighters used special meters to check all nearby buildings for gas. All of the buildings were cleared and everyone was sent back to there residences and businesses.
