The Westhampton Beach Fire Department was activated for a reported Heavy Rescue at the scene of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Old Riverhead Road on Thursday morning just before 8am.

Ex- Chief Darryl Schunk who was the chauffeur of Rescue 7-8-5 also assumed command while the Rescue Captain ran operations of the heavy rescue. The firefighters quickly removed the passenger side door so EMS could gain access to treat the patient. The driver side didn't have any damage, so the driver was easily removed. The driver of the garbage truck was also able to get out without assistance. Fire Police were on scene diverting traffic around the accident.

Westbound Montauk Highway was closed for approximately 45 minutes during the rescue operation and waiting for the tow trucks. The Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance were on scene treating the occupants and transported one patient to Peconic Bay Medical Center for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries. Westhampton Beach Village Police were also on scene.
