Fully Involved Box Truck on Sunrise Highway

On July 2, 2018 the department was activated for a approximately 20 foot box truck on fire on Sunrise Highway, Eastbound, 1.5 miles west of Exit 63. The NYS Police were on scene and advised that the truck was fully involved. Rescue 785 and Assistant Chief 7833 were on scene of a vehicle vs pedestrian accident on Dune Road. Engine 7-8-2 was responding to Dune Road and was redirected to Sunrise Highway by 7833.

Assistant Chief Kevin Raynor arrived on Sunrise Highway confirming the fully involved and immediately shut down the eastbound lanes for the responding apparatus, the safety of the public and firefighters. Engine2 arrived and stretched the 1-3/4" front bumper line and began to extinguish the fire while tanker 9 supplied Engine 2 with additional water. The fire was quickly extinguished and the road reopened. The truck, carrying pallets of water and soda was completely destroyed.

The truck driver was able to get out of the vehicle unharmed and there were no injuries to any firefighters. All units were back in quarters at 3:30pm.
