On August 22, 2017 at 12:23pm the department was activated for a reported Motor Vehicle Accident East of Speonk-Riverhead Road on the eastbound side of Sunrise Highway. The dispatcher was advised a dump truck was off into the woods with one injured.
Chief Engineer Billy Dalton arrived on scene to find a dump truck that was moving gravel off into the woods with a Fuel Spill. The driver of the dump truck was out of the vehicle on arrival and stated his rear tire blew out causing him to veer off the road into the trees. When the truck left the road, it caused a fuel tank to rupture open, leaking its contents. The leak was unable to be contained so the NY State D.E.C emergency spill response team were called to the scene and cleaned up the contaminated soil. The driver was transported to an area hospital for evaluation of minor injuries.
While members were working this scene another accident occurred at approximately 1:05pm. This severe accident was approximately 1/2 mile west of ours in the Eastport Fire District. 2nd Assistant Chief Theune responded to evaluate the scene as well as the Eastport Fire Department and Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance. An 18 wheel truck was unable to stop before striking multiple vehicles that were slowed down due to the dump truck incident. Sunrise Highway was closed for numerous hours while the road was cleared and an accident reconstruction took place.
